Prior to 2017, Roger Deakins CBE, ASC, BSC stood as cinema’s most beloved paradox: a titan of visual storytelling with fourteen Academy Award nominations and zero wins. From the icy desolation of Fargo to the silhouetted shadowplays of Skyfall, Deakins had long established himself as a master of photographic restraint. Yet it was Denis Villeneuve’s towering sci-fi sequel, Blade Runner 2049, that finally forced the Academy to recognize what cinematographers had known for decades. Following in the massive shadow of Jordan Cronenweth’s ground-breaking work on Ridley Scott’s original 1982 film was an impossible task. Nowhere is Deakins’ philosophy more breathtakingly realized than in the radioactive, dust-choked ruins of Las Vegas. When K (Ryan Gosling) wanders through the eroded monuments of a fallen pleasure city, the screen is drenched in an oppressive, nuclear amber. To lesser DPs, this sequence would have been a trivial exercise in post-production color grading, a simple turn of a dial in DaVinci Resolve. Deakins, however, rejected digital shortcuts.
To achieve the suffocating atmosphere, Deakins and his long-time gaffer, Bill O’Leary, constructed massive lighting grids above the soundstages at Origo Studios in Budapest. They deployed hundreds of classic tungsten units fitted with deep amber and yellow gel combinations, bouncing raw light through thick, continuously pumped atmospheric fog. By saturating the physical set with light, Gosling’s character naturally falls into striking silhouette against giant, eroded female forms. Inside Niander Wallace’s brutalist headquarters, Deakins flipped the paradigm from suffocating atmospheric diffusion to razor-sharp architectural precision. The environment features sweeping walls of bare concrete suspended over shallow basins of actual water. Rather than using static key lights on Jared Leto or Sylvia Hoeks, Deakins mounted powerful motorized tungsten rigs to track slowly around the ceiling, reflecting off the agitated water trays below.
The result is a living tapestry of organic, rippling caustic light bouncing across the sterile, cavernous architecture. Interspersed with horizontal shadow slats that slice through the frame like blades, the lighting pattern reinforces the film's themes of creation, blindness, and corporate omnipotence.

Every shot is framed with mathematical discipline, utilizing single-camera setups to ensure that every angle carries maximum emotional and compositional weight.
Blade Runner 2049 did not just end Deakins’ Oscar curse; it rewrote the manual for how large-scale science fiction can be photographed. By favoring practical light sources, strict color palettes per scene, and spatial geometry over digital crutches, Deakins designed light as physical architecture.
